Francisco Jorge Gonçalves

Francisco Jorge Goncalves is a legal adviser in the Portuguese Authority for Civil Protection concerning public and defence procurement and security issues regarding building security. He is also an intern in the intelligence community, LLC, and a Guest Docent in Universidade Aberta. Previously, he worked in the Directorate-General of Internal Affairs (Ministry of Internal Affairs) concerning security legislative politics. Before that he worked in the Portuguese Department of Corrections (Ministry of Justice), with a special focus in administrative law and public procurement. Likewise, he was an Officer of the Portuguese Army (1998-2008), with a strong focal point in public and defence procurement – and defence affairs. He has a degree in Law (1989/1994) and also in History (2001/2005), and has a Master´s Degree in Political Science and International Relations: Security and Defence (2009) by the Institute for Political Studies of the Portuguese Catholic University. Currently, he is writing his PHD thesis in the same university. He has published a book «Radical Islamism and the Combat of Its Threats: From Dawa to Jihad» (Diario de Bordo Editores, 2011), and more than 20 journal articles, and is also a member of several scientific associations and investigations centres. His area of research is centred in Islamism and its non-violent threats. Likewise, he as a keen interest in the process of radicalization in Islamic extremism and its combat: deradicalization and counter radicalization.
